Chapter 42

Four men stood beside her in the airlock. All were armed with M4 carbines and wore hazmat suits with independent air supplies. Two of them looked at her as if she was crazy, and maybe she was.

Naomi waited patiently as the door behind her was sealed, and the decontamination system activated, filling the room with purified air. She turned and checked to make sure her dangling umbilical hoses were loose enough to extend all the way into the next room.

When the outer airlock finally opened, one of the MPs turned to her. “Are you sure you don’t want us to escort you?”

She shook her head. “No, the last thing we want is another confrontation. I’m just here to talk to her.”

The soldier looked visibly relieved. “Okay.”

Naomi picked up the small hand case on the floor and walked out into the next room. Pieces of electronic equipment lay on the once pristinely clean floor after having been ripped out of the walls.

A makeshift barricade stood at the other end of the room. The bed had been placed on its side, along with the wheeled medical cart and pieces of the wardrobe closet. Naomi caught a glimpse of movement just behind it.

She stopped at around a dozen paces from the barrier, put down the small container and raised her hands. “I’m Dr. Shelly, and I mean you no harm. Is it alright if I could talk to you?”

The voice coming from the other side of the rampart had a slightly guttural tone to it. “Get behind it.”

Picking up the container, she continued to shuffle forward until she made it to one side of the barricade and peered over. Cassie was sitting cross-legged behind the obstruction and looked up at her with a quicksilver sheen in her eyes.

Naomi smiled. “How are you doing?”

Cassie pointed towards the floor. “Sit down so they can’t read your lips.”

“Alright,” she said. After placing the case down, she made sure her umbilicals remained untangled before gingerly placing her butt on the floor. “How did you figure out where they planted each and every device?”

“I can sense them.”

“Is it your eyes? What other abilities do you have?”

“Did the general instruct you to sweet talk me and take a blood sample?”

Naomi shook her head. “This was my idea. I had to argue my case for hours before he finally relented.”

“Like I told you all before, I’m not cooperating until I get to see my mom.”

“I’m working on it,” Naomi said. “Are you feeling okay? It’s been more than a day since any sort of meal was sent over.”

“I could use some real food, yeah.”

Naomi placed the plastic container in front of her and opened it. She took out a bag of potato chips and a sandwich wrapped in plastic.

In less than a second, Cassie reached out and grabbed both items before Naomi could even blink. The subject stuffed the sandwich into her mouth and swallowed the whole thing after a few chews. She didn’t even bother to unwrap the hoagie.
